Austin's Historic Music District
Join us on a stroll through one of the country's last walkable music districts, and learn how flash floods have shaped Austin’s musical landscape.
Formally established in 2013, the Red River Cultural District is one of the last walkable music districts in the United States. It is also the epicenter of Austin's famed music festival, South by Southwest. Despite its popularity, this district faces threats from gentrification. Developed in partnership with Preservation Austin, this walking tour focuses on the environmental and social forces that turned Red River Street into a music hub and the forces that have made this hub vulnerable to downtown development. We will also show you the stomping grounds of a local music legend.
